The novel is about Jim how he explores his sexuality and develops his confidence as a gay man; how his parents support him as a gay son; how he experiences living with another young man; and the influence of other gay men. It is also about Andrea whom Jim came to know as a university student and who later bore Jim’s son through an AHR procedure.
Jim’s first love, Jeff, opts for a life focused on his art. He has no wish to father a child. Jim’s later partner, David, accepts parental responsibilities with Jim’s child by Andrea and subsequently his own. Andrea’s partner, Sarah, does the same with Jim’s son and her own daughter. The story works through the social, legal, medical and career issues involved in this family of choice.

When I first picked up this book I immediately found myself being faced with the challenges that a closeted gay male faces in his day to day life. The first few pages made it clear that even the relatively simple act of choosing who to approach and flirt with becomes a challenge when you're not open about your sexuality and who you are. The danger of being rejected and turned away increases dramatically when you aren't even certain if the person you're interested in approaching is going to be interested in you based on your gender,and could in fact even become violent.The paranoia this can engender is immediately addressed in the same few pages, as he wonders whether a female character he's interacting with is asking innocent questions, or if she knows more than she lets on.
The book goes on to involve the perilous path he walks just trying to be himself, trying to find love, and all of the pitfalls and difficulties that come with it.
We get some fairly racy sex scenes that push the rating for this book to a 18+ status, but other than that, this is a good book for anyone going through this time in their life, or who knows someone who is. Definitely a must read.

The author does a great job creating characters who spring to life. The attention to detail was also very well done throughout this read.
The characters take us through an interesting drama about family, life and the decisions we all make in life.
I think the author paints a great picture of the challenges many gay people (and gay couples) endure that are not commonly discussed. There are many social, legal and medical situations that unfold in this story. There is also a lot about the everyday relationships that could apply to anyone – gay or not. I felt this was written really well and the author’s s character interaction was very well done.
The author also shows us the choices (and they are often hard choices) that a gay person may have to make regarding finding a mate, dating, family interaction, marriage and having children.
I was curious when I came across this book and to be honest, really didn’t know what to expect. What I found was a very well written read. The characters all interacted well with each other.
The story put a lot in perspective to me regarding the day to day challenges many gays and gay couples may encounter. In this story, Jim and his partner decide they want children. The decision to do so then evolves into finding the right woman to carry their child.
I won’t give any spoilers but I found this book to be a great story about life, living with acceptance of others choices and a smattering of romance. There are some explicit comments here and there in this book but not excessively.
